Santa Cruz Jesuit Missions – Detailed itinerary

DAY 1 – SANTA CRUZ, SAN RAMÓN, SAN JAVIER, CONCEPCIÓN

Pick up from hotel at 8 am. Head north-northwest for an exclusive adventure that will bring you through the Chiquitania region of the Oriente Boliviano to the main western stations of the Jesuit Missions circuit.

After an approximately 3 hours’ drive (185km/115 miles) we get to San Ramòn, our first stop. Here we can stretch our legs and visit the local church, modeled after the misiones. We continue our journey; we have lunch on the road and barely 50 kms (less than an hour’s drive) north of San Ramón, we get to the first Mission: San Javier. San Javier was the first mission to be included in the Unesco World Heritage list and is a beautiful example of the Jesuit Missions architectural style, which is also still partially visible today in the surrounding village.

We continue to town of Concepcion (60 kms/37 miles, approximately one hour’s drive), where we will have our local style dinner and spend the night.

Meals included: Lunch, dinner

Transportation: Private SUV

Lodging: Hotel in Concepción

DAY 2 – CONCEPCIÓN, SANTA CRUZ

We visit the town of Concepción: explore the historical downtown, allegedly the best-preserved example of colonial architecture in Bolivia, and the Jesuit Mission Church. Concepcion’s mission Church is also part of the Unesco list and is another spectacular example of the Jesuit architecture. We move to the Orchids Sanctuary to see some fine examples of orchids in their own habitat, and we are ready for lunch. After lunch, we start the journey back to Santa Cruz, stopping now and then for a stretch or photo opps.

Meals included: breakfast (at hotel in Concepción), lunch

Transportation: Private SUV

Lodging: N/A
